FIA Councils and Committees

The Fire Industry Association FIA is a not-for-profit membership organisation overseen by a Board of Directors and seven specialist Councils. Together, these groups guide the FIA’s strategic direction, helping us represent the fire industry and raise professional standards across the UK and beyond.

Our governance

Our structure ensures that every area of the fire sector has a voice. The Board oversees the association’s overall management, while each Council represents a specific area of industry expertise. Councils are made up of elected FIA members who volunteer their time and knowledge to shape best practice, legislation, and industry development.

Our Councils

Each of our seven Councils focuses on a key part of the fire industry:

  • FRES Council – Represents manufacturers and suppliers of goods and services to fire and rescue services

  • Export Council – Promotes export opportunities for UK fire safety businesses around the world

  • Extinguishing Council – Supports manufacturers and suppliers of fire extinguishing equipment

  • Fire Detection and Alarm Council – Represents manufacturers and suppliers of fire detection and alarm systems

  • Fire Risk Assessment Council – Represents those providing fire risk assessment services

  • Fire Engineering Council – Represents fire engineering service providers across the UK

  • Services Council – Represents installers, designers, commissioners, and maintainers of fire protection systems

Each Council includes 15 elected members representing small, medium, and large member companies. Council seats are held for two years, with nominations and elections announced through the members’ area.

Working groups

Many Councils have working groups (WGs) that focus on specific projects, standards, or technical developments. Working groups provide a platform for members to collaborate, share expertise, and contribute to guidance documents or policy proposals.

Members can request to join a working group at any time of year. To apply, email with your CV and a short statement of interest. Applications are reviewed by the group, and you will be contacted once a decision has been made.

You can view a list of active working groups, their goals, and meeting schedules in the members’ area of this website.

Get involved

We welcome all FIA members to play an active role in shaping the future of our industry. Whether you want to stand for election to one of our Councils or contribute to a working group, your input helps us represent the sector effectively and drive positive change.

Check the members’ area regularly for nomination timetables, current vacancies, and updates on FIA group activity.
