Level 3 BS 5839-1 Fundamentals Qualification

The Fire Industry Association proudly delivers the Level 3 BS 5839-1 Fundamentals Qualification, offering a comprehensive introduction to Fire Detection and Alarm (FD&A) systems in non-domestic premises. This nationally recognised course, regulated by FireQual, equips learners with the knowledge needed to meet the new BAFE SP203-1 Version 8 requirements.

 

What you will learn

This qualification provides a core understanding of BS 5839-1, covering:

• Design principles and system components
• Installation, inspection, and testing requirements
• Commissioning and maintenance responsibilities
• Compliance and documentation aligned with BS 5839-1

It forms the essential foundation for working safely and competently within the FD&A sector.

Course structure and assessment

• Two training units, each lasting two days (four days in total)
• Certificate of attendance awarded after Unit 1
• Open-book exam at the end of Unit 2
• On successful completion, you will receive a FireQual Level 3 regulated qualification

This qualification is fully recognised across the United Kingdom and meets the BAFE SP203-1 V8 Level 3 competency requirement.

Already completed foundation?

If you have already completed the FIA’s Foundation in FD&A, you can take the two-day Conversion Unit to achieve the Fundamentals qualification. The Conversion Unit builds upon your prior learning to gain a FireQual regulated qualification in less time.

 

Progression

The Fundamentals qualification is a standalone achievement and an essential step in your professional development. To progress further, learners can take the Fundamentals to Advanced course, which includes the Foundation exam and bridges directly to the Advanced modules in installation, maintenance, commissioning, or design.
