What to expect
The FIA offers secure online examinations for all regulated Level 3 qualifications. Our online exams follow the same format, rigour, and integrity as classroom assessments, enabling you to qualify wherever you are in the world.
Every exam is invigilated in real time by FIA representatives to ensure fairness, identity verification, and compliance with awarding organisation requirements.
Eligible qualifications
Online exams are currently available for the following FIA Level 3 qualification courses:
- BS 5839-1 Fundamentals in FD&A Conversion Course
- BS 5839-1 Fundamentals in FD&A Unit 2
- BS 5839-6 Fundamentals in FD&A
- Foundation Course
- Fundamentals to Advanced Course
- FD&A Advanced Maintainer
- FD&A Advanced Installer
- FD&A Advanced Commissioner
- FD&A Advanced Designer
- Environmental Course
Each of these online exams delivers the same recognised qualifications as their classroom equivalents.
What you need
Before your exam, make sure you have:
- A desktop or laptop computer, or two tablets
- A stable internet connection (wired preferred)
- Google Chrome browser installed
- A working webcam and microphone
- Photographic ID (passport, driving licence or work ID)
- Calculator (not on a phone, tablet or PC)
- A sheet of blank note paper and a pen or pencil
For the best experience, use two screens or devices: one for the Zoom meeting and one for the exam platform.
On the day, step by step

Join the Zoom link provided in your confirmation email

Show your photo ID to the invigilator

Receive your unique exam login and password

Access the exam platform using Google Chrome

Follow the invigilator’s briefing and begin your exam

Keep your webcam on for the entire exam

At the end, show your note paper to the camera when asked
You will receive full joining instructions a few hours before your exam with all required links and support contact numbers.
Rules and best practice
To ensure a fair and professional process:
- Keep your webcam and microphone active throughout the exam
- Remain in view of the camera at all times
- Reconnect quickly if your connection is lost
- Follow all invigilator instructions
- Use your calculator and note paper only as permitted
Any attempt to breach the rules may result in warnings or exam failure.

FAQs
Most FIA qualification exams are closed book, meaning no reference materials are permitted.
But, for Fundamentals courses, the exams are open book. You will need a copy of either BS 5839-1 or BS 5839-6, available in hard copy or authorised digital format. These can be purchased from our eShop.
If you lose connection, reconnect as soon as possible.
If the disconnection lasts more than 10 minutes, the exam will need to be re-scheduled.
Support contact numbers are provided in your joining instructions and can be used for urgent technical help.
All FIA online exams are recorded to meet awarding organisation (AO) audit requirements.
Recordings are securely stored for a limited period in line with FIA data protection policies and are used only to confirm exam integrity or in the event of an appeal.
Your exam results will be sent by email after marking. Certificates are issued digitally or as printed copies on request.
However, if you do not pass your exam first time round you can easily book a re-sit online via our training calendar.
