BS 5839-6 Fundamentals in FD&A Conversion

This unit is exclusively open to those who have completed the Foundation in FD&A and is aimed to get you up to speed ready to take the qualification exam, using both the knowledge previously gained from the Foundation course and the learning from these two days of training.

2 days

This course covers the additional guidance and recommendations of BS 5839-1:2025. In addition to what's learnt during the Foundation course, this knowledge is required to achieve the qualification in the fundamentals of FD&A systems in non-domestic premises.

During the course delegates will learn to navigate sections 1-7 of BS 5839-1, plus the annexes, in order to gain the additional knowledge required for the exam.

Delegates will gain additional knowledges relating to the:

  • General requirements of BS 5839-1
  • Design consideration associated the FD&A System design
  • Requirements relating to the limitation of false alarms and unwanted alarms signals
  • Recommendations relating to the installation process
  • Recommendations relating to the commissioning & handover process
  • Maintenance requirements
  • User responsibilities
  • The annexes

At the end of this two-day conversion course, delegates will take an open book examination to test their knowledge. During the exam, delegates will use a copy of BS 5839-1:2025 to determine the answers to a set of multiple-choice questions. No other reference material will be allowed; delegates should only use BS 5839-1:2025.

For any courses held online, the examination will also be online. Find out more about the oline exam process.

  • This unit is exclusively for those who have taken the Foundation in FD&A course
  • We strongly recommend that delegates review the Foundation course manual beforehand
  • Delegates will need to undertake some pre-learning, and read ‘Conversion to Level 3, Book Three’.
  • Delegates will need to have access to either a digital or hard copy of BS 5839-1:2025

For those wishing to undertake some prior reading before the course, we would recommend a book written by C S Todd, MBE: The Design, Installation, Commissioning and Maintenance of Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems in Non‑Domestic Premises. A Guide to BS 5839‑1:2017. 5th Edition.

Upon completion of the exam, delegates will get an instant result. For those successfully completing the exam, a certificate will follow in the post, in due course.

Once the Qualification in the Fundamentals of Fire Detection and Alarm Systems has been achieved, delegates will be eligible to take the Qualification for Fire Detection & Fire Alarm Systems in Domestic Buildings.

Delegates will receive a course book at the start of the course. The course book contains a copy of the slides used during the course, along with an explanation to accompany each slide and space to make their own learner notes. These books can be kept by the delegates and are a useful reference tool for the workplace.

For face-to-face courses, a hard copy of the course notes is provided at the start of the course. For online courses, delegates will have digital access to the course notes. Upon completion, delegates will be given the option to receive a hard copy of the course book in the post.
