BS 5839-6 Fundamentals in FD&A

Have you completed the Fundamentals course (Units 1 & 2) covering BS 5839-1:2025 for FD&A Systems in non-domestic premises?

Are you responsible in any way for fire detection systems within domestic premises ranging from single family dwellings, HMO’s, sheltered housing or supported housing?

If you are, then this one-day course will provide essential training for you, your colleagues and is considered essential for all technicians working within the sector.

1 day

During the course, delegates will be taken through the requirements of BS 5839-6 to provide an understanding of the following:

  • The scope of BS 5839-6 and the premises covered
  • The balance between fire risk, system reliability and its success rate
  • The different grades and categories of system available
  • A guide to the minimum grade and categories of system for typical premises
  • The location of detectors & manual call points specific to domestic premises
  • The requirement for the limitation of false alarms
  • The audibility requirements for domestic premises
  • The requirements for installation, commissioning & certification

The format of the course follows that of the Fundamentals course for BS 5839-1 and can be taken both in the class room and online.

At the end of the course, delegates take a multiple-choice exam. During this, they are allowed access to a copy of BS 5839-6:2019. No other reference material will be allowed.

For any courses held online, the examination will also be online. Find out more about the online examination process.

If you are unsuccessful during the exam at the end of the course, you will be eligible for a resit.

A copy of the course syllabus is available by clicking on the following link, BS 5839-6 Course Syllabus.

The successful completion of the Fundamentals course covering BS 5839-1:2025 for non-domestic premises is a prerequisite for this course. This is due to the requirements of BS 5839-1 being applicable to the larger more complex Grade A systems dealt with in BS 5839-6.

For those wishing to undertake some prior reading before the course, we would recommend a book written by C S Todd, MBE: The Design, Installation, Commissioning and Maintenance of Fire Detection and Fire Alarm Systems in Domestic Premises. A Guide to BS 5839 6:2019. 4th Edition.

Upon completion of the exam, delegates will get an instant result, and a certificate will follow in due course in the post.

Delegates will receive a course book at the start of the course. The course book contains a copy of the slides used during the course, along with an explanation to accompany each slide and space to make their own learner notes. These books can be kept by the delegates and are a useful reference tool for the workplace.

For face-to-face courses, a hard copy of the course notes is provided at the start of the course. For online courses, delegates will have digital access to the course notes. Upon completion, delegates will be given the option to receive a hard copy of the course book in the post.
