Insulation Resistance Testing

This course provides a detailed understanding of insulation resistance testing within FD&A systems.

Covering the theory behind insulation resistance,relevant standards,testing procedures and practical applications. Learners will gain the confidence to perform insulation resistance and continuity testing in accordance with BS 5839-1, with guidance from BS 7671 & IET Guidance Note 3 where relevant.

This course is designed for installation and commissioning engineers working with fire detection and alarm systems, as well as those involved in inspection, testing, and maintenance. It is also suitable for electricians, system designers, and technical supervisors who require a deeper understanding of insulation resistance and continuity testing principles in the context of BS 5839-1 compliance.

Installers – In order to comply with BS 5839-1 36.1 cables with a manufacturers voltage rating suitable for mains supplies, should be subjected to an insulation resistance test at 500 V DC. This course will provide useful guidance on how to comply with this requirement.

Commissioning technicians – As per clause 36.4 of BS 5839-1, the results of all tests should be recorded and made available to the organization responsible for commissioning the system. This course will provide commissioning technicians with an understanding of what the results mean and how to interpret them.  

Maintenance technicians & fault finding – Being able to fault find is an essential part of the job at any stage. Knowing when an insulation resistance test would be useful to help locate a faulty cable, knowing how to safely perform this test properly with injury or damage to equipment and knowing what the results mean is essential.

This course covers:

  • Principles of conductors and insulators
  • Purpose and importance of insulation resistance testing for electrical safety and system reliability
  • Common causes of insulation and cable failure
  • Bending radius requirements and cable installation best practice
  • Overview of BS 7671, BS 5839-1, and IET Guidance Note 3
  • Correct procedures for insulation resistance testing and result recording
  • Factors influencing test results (e.g. temperature, capacitance, leakage currents)
  • Different test methods including spot reading, time-resistance, and step-voltage techniques
  • Continuity testing and its relationship to BS 5839-1
  • Testing for MICC (Pyro) cable and troubleshooting low readings
  • Working safely in explosive atmospheres
  • Selection, calibration, and maintenance of test equipment

None.

Previous knowledge, experience, and a basic understanding of electrical systems and or fire alarm installations would off course be beneficial, but it is not essential.

Anybody designing, installing, commissioning, and maintaining should have a basic understanding of how to complete this test, be they an apprentice of seasoned professional.

Pre-Learning

Pre-learning isn’t a requirement of this course however it is always beneficial.

Watching videos on YouTube in relation to insulation resistance testing on either extra low voltage or low voltage systems would be beneficial, especially for those without any prior experience of insulation resistance testing.

Learners are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the fundamentals of electrical theory, particularly Ohm’s Law, resistance, and basic testing procedures.
