Servicing & Maintenance of Portable Fire Extinguishers

This course is ideal for anyone who will be carrying out the servicing and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers or those likely to answer technical questions regarding portable extinguishers.

4 days

This course covers:

  • The theory of fire and extinguishing
  • Selection and positioning of the right fire extinguisher
  • Classes of fire
  • Definitions of a portable extinguisher
  • Fire ratings and flammable materials

  • Maintenance requirements
  • Carrying out a service: delegates will be expected to complete an inspection and service a range of extinguishers

At the end of the course, delegates take two exams - a theory exam with 70 Questions in a multiple choice format and a practical exam.

Those achieving a 75% or above pass mark in both exams will receive a BAFE certificate.

Delegates should attend a refresher course every three years to maintain current knowledge and certification.

Whilst there is no necessary experience required to be allowed to sit the training, obviously any previous experience or shadowing of a competant engineer will be beneficial prior to sitting the course.

Tools Required

Each delegate must bring:

  • Rubber hammer / mallet
  • 10” adjustable spanner (for CO2 horn removal)
  • 1 x 2kg spring balance scale (used to determine cartridge weight)
  • 1 x digital scale - these must be suitable for weighing the extinguisher itself. Please ensure the hook at the bottom of the scale is small enough to fit inside the wall hanging bracket of an extinguisher. 25kg Electro Samson scales are recommended

  • Cleaning brush (2" paintbrush will work for this)
  • Gauge bradawl tester (Paperclips will work here if an appropriate bradawl cannot be sourced)
  • Anti tamper seals
  • Gauge dots / Year patch stickers
  • Cloth

The following is not required but will prove useful for servicing practise:

  • Screwdriver or pick for o-ring removal
  • CO2 O-rings
  • Mole grips
  • Air pump gauge tester - for larger coil sprung gauges found on Older Nu Swift / Moyne Roberts / Amerex products

Photo ID

Each delegate will be required to provide an approved form of ID at registration.
