The Third-Party Certification Process

Understanding the process

Third-party certification (TPC) means that an independent, UKAS-accredited certification body has assessed your organisation and confirmed it meets the requirements of specific British or International Standards. It’s your formal proof of competence and quality assurance.

The process verifies both your technical performance and business management systems, ensuring your company consistently delivers compliant, professional fire safety services.

Step-by-step path to Certification

Below is a typical route to achieving third-party certification for your business:

1. Select your certification scheme

Identify the scheme relevant to your work, for example:

  • BAFE SP203-1 (Fire Detection and Alarm Systems)

  • BAFE SP205 (Fire Risk Assessment)

  • BAFE SP101 (Portable Fire Extinguishers)

  • LPS 1014 (Fire Detection and Alarm Systems)

2. Choose an accredited certification body

Select a UKAS-accredited certification body that operates your chosen scheme. The FIA can advise on suitable options.

3. Prepare your management system

Establish or refine your Quality Management System (QMS) to meet scheme requirements. Documentation, procedures and records will form part of your audit evidence.

4. Undergo assessment and audit

Certification bodies conduct two key stages:

  • Stage 1 audit: Review of documentation and readiness for certification

  • Stage 2 audit: Full on-site evaluation of competence and compliance

5. Address any non-conformities

If the auditor identifies any issues, you will receive a report detailing the required corrective actions before approval.

6. Achieve certification

Once successful, your business is issued with an official certificate confirming third-party certification.

7. Maintain annual surveillance

Certification includes annual audits to confirm continuing compliance and quality standards.

Why UKAS accreditation matters

UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) is the national body recognised by the UK Government to assess certification bodies. Choosing a UKAS-accredited body ensures your certification is genuine, impartial and internationally recognised.
