Residents of The Milliners building in Redcliffe, Bristol, are bracing for a significant overhaul as the top floor is set for demolition and reconstruction due to severe fire safety issues.

The building, previously embroiled in the cladding scandal post-Grenfell Fire, necessitates extensive renovations for compliance. The financial responsibility, whether borne by building owners or leaseholders, adds to the uncertainties faced by residents.

In a noteworthy development for Bristol's fire safety landscape, occupants of The Milliners building in Redcliffe have received evacuation notices as the top floor undergoes a necessary transformation. The decision arises from concerning fire safety issues that have plagued the building since its conversion from an office to flats six years ago.

Grey GR, part of the RailPen group of companies and current owners, acknowledged "significant issues with the construction of the building at the point of original development." The top floor was found to fall short of the required building regulation standards.

Steph Pike, a resident turned fire safety campaigner, expressed both concern and anticipation regarding the imminent renovations. Questions regarding the financial burden remain unanswered, with uncertainties lingering over whether the building's owners or leaseholders will be responsible for the costs.

Grey GR, in a letter to residents, outlined the deficiencies, citing non-compliance of the 'SIPS' timber frame and floor construction with building regulations and cladding panels that failed to meet designated fire resistance. They regretted the impending disruption but emphasized the necessity of the work to enhance the safety of the building. Residents are assured that the company will collaborate to find suitable alternative accommodation and cover associated costs. The remediation phase is expected to commence early next year, pending relevant planning approvals. Transparency and resident engagement remain paramount throughout the process.
